electrical or ignition gremlin??

Post by d2racer »

ok heres a new one

some background
88 stang , no computer , pro systems carb , c-4 , msd digital-6 ign with msd distributer
runs 11.60's flat out
lost the starter last time out , both ears cracked -fell out and dragged it - now fixed

took it off the trailer - ran fine driving around - start it in lanes - seems fine , go through water and try to burnout - car wont rev - sounds like it on a two step chip ??

back in pits - check everything - cant find it but positive wire running to elec fan is red hot - burns my finger ??
put timing light on and start car runs fine ???

run up and qualify - runs fine , go 3 rounds running fine

4th round , does burnout fine - go to stage - wont rev again ???

idle down track and at turnoff - car runs fine again ? WTF??

msd digital 6 has two step adjusted by dials but IT IS NOT HOOKED UP !
no wires look bad or burnt or loose

cant find anything obvious - could it be a bad ground somewhere , maybe fan motor is overheating causeing some feedback thing - it does have a relay in line ??

i hate elec crap . kind of shooting in the dark since i wont even know if i fixed it till it does it again :mad2:

well i solved the overheated wire to the fan problem anyway - seems the inline plug i installed a couple weeks back is too light duty and causing a resistence , wire got hot in one minute with it inline , cut it out and wire fan direct and it ran 5 minutes without even getting warm :mad2:

as far as the car running like its on a low rpm chip ? everyone elec i talked to feels its a defective ign box

so i borrowed a known good msd 6AL to run for a couple weeks - see if the problem comes back next couple of races ?

msd claims its elec noise from somewhere else- plug wires or coil or radio
