How much power can a stock powerglide case take??

The engineers at General Motors Hydromatic Division that designed the Aluminum Powerglide are probably enjoying pimp status (wherever they may be). The truth be told, they deserve every bit. I don’t think that they ever envisioned the result of their labors living on as long or as strong. The thought that their design would be the transmission of choice for serious racing applications was never a consideration. That being said, I have seen stock glide cases behind 1100HP with mixed results. Most of the failures were not broken cases, but instead were repeated low band burn up due to the fact that the case flexes in the area of the low band servo resulting in a massive pressure loss. For this reason, I always recommend using an aftermarket case in any application over 700Hp, just to be on the safe side.

Like I said, with mixed results. Personally I would rather have a purpose built, racing, SFI certified case in the event of an internal planetary or gear train failure. The steel internal shield used in the after-market glide case is far superior to the add-on exterior aluminum shields. I value my legs a lot more than the $900.00 investment. Tony

Thanks folks, We did use the stock case but we brought the Cevlar sheild to put over it , just in-case. All internals are ATI aftermarket, also have a 1:98 first gear set in it.
And my daughters car is just @ the 700 hp mark. The car seems to be very consistant with it in there, but she liked the launch of the 400 just a little better. The wheels don't lift as much with the glide, lol. It's staying in for the rest of this season..
