Anyone ever work with fiberglass?

Post by n20capri »

Want to try my hand at working with fiberglass...anyone ever use it or build something with it? I want to make a battery tray and while I could certainly use aluminum I wanted to try fiberglass.

There are so many things out there it's confusing...The consensus seems to be alternated (criss crossed) layers of mat and cloth of course saturated with the resin (and a slow hardener). I was looking for a kit but wanted some better advice. Links are always good :)

I've read Home Depot sells the supplies but I did a quick search on their site and in store and came up empty.

I'd make a tray shell out of some sort of thin wood then wrap with the fiberglass. I've been reading a lot about speaker boxes and they say they need like 7 layers but the boxes are strong enough to stand on. Thoughts, advice, links of where to buy etc etc.

Thanks
Mike

above post is correct.
Pep Boys has everything you will need, they even have kits.
I once fiberglassed 1/4 studs to the inside of a hood scoop and bolted it thru the hood with a small vacuum hose cut and placed on the bottom,Looked and worked great.

You can also buy larger quantities of resin, hardener, and cloth at a marine supply store, boat dealer or marina. Best bet is to try something small,it's not that difficult. You can also research online and i'll tell you there is a lot of info out there. I worked for a company called Trojan Yacht some years back and was fortunate enough to learn a lot about working with glas. Good luck, Mike

Mike give UNK a PM, he does it all day, full front ends, bonding to carbon fiber and more, he did many of the 10.5 cars that wanted a twin turbo outlet in the front of the car. One of the most impressive was what he did to Harris' GTO, the hood came set up for turbo's sticking out the hood next to the cowl, you would never know they were there. There's your place to have the hood made for your Capri also, lol.
