Shift Times?

Post by Quinnie Racing »

I’m a bit new to this box thing and would like to get a feeling for the 1st to 2nd shift point on time for a turbo 400, 3 speed. What is the around about time setting in the box for this shift @ +/- 68k?

Thank you for your help,
Glenn

depends on your combo, where your cam makes power etc. give us some motor specs and we can give you a ballpark, also size of the tires and the gears.

If you have a playback tach, make a pass shifting where you want to shift then playback and stopwatch it.

What delay box do you have. I have a MEGA 450 and to get my shift times i just run with the playback tach thats in the box, after a run you can play it back and see at what time your desire rpm occured. For me, in a dragster that runs high 7.30's with a BBC, 1.80 powerglide, 4.10 rear gear and a 33.5 inch tire i hit 6900 at 1.83 seconds after the trans brake releases. Setup to shift at 6900 the rpm will continue to 7100 before air shifter does it's thing and the trans completes the shift.

So as an educated guess i'd start at 1.4 to 1.5 after the brake releases, see where that puts you, i don't think 1.4 to 1.5 is going to put you into an unsafe RPM, you may have to add time to that number.

Note: I have a jumper wire made so i can disconnect the Playback feature once i get into eliminations, Jumper has to be remove from outside the car so no one can speculate that I removed it from the drivers seat after a run...
