Alcohol/ e.t help????
88 Monte gutted w/ 350 .060 350 turbo man. w/ rev. 5K stall. 4.56 gears 28.0-9/15 Hoosiers. 4150/850 Built by C&S. Setting was 170 primary 170 secondary. 36 degrees timing. Lunati 40149 cam. in which I shift @ 7K redline 7400. Off the trailer 11.002-121mph 60' 1.53. Temp. increased 10 degrees from 200 so I added jet on secondary side with no affect. I added 2 degrees of timing with no affect. Jetted up and down from 170-176 secondary side with no affect. I did have a small stumble but I jetted down on the primary to 168 and its ok if I leave at 2600 and flash the converter. It does pull the one wheel off the ground. Motor is new along with trans. etc... Would like to see a high 10 but am baffled that my car runs dead on 11.0-11.40 no matter what I do to it. Car was oringinally supposed to be built for the 10 index but instead the machine shop just took my 7400 smackers and sent my down the road with my steel head small block with a dirt track cam and then they refuse to give me my build sheet or itemized parts list so I have no real idea of what is in my motor. I do have a cam card. Any suggestions other then what I have mentioned please feel free!! My home track is Cecil and I have the white monte ls with the ss wing and the Finish line Performance windshield banner.

170's on a 85o cfm 4150 seems large. Do you have a WideBand o2 or Egt on the car. I have a 1000cfm nickerson carb that has worked incredible on 3 motors ranging from 377 to 434 and largest jet is 164. I don't tune with water temp, every combo is different, and depending on Radiator size/efficency, pump volume, and cylinder heads, you just can't tune to pick up temp going down track. Buying a Innovate wideband with a RPM cable will be the best money you spend. Every run you make yeilds real world tangable data.
$7400 builds a killer SBC nowadays. but if you took delivery of the engine already, and it's in the car... you might be beat.
Post the cam specs if you get a chance.

Re: Alcohol/ e.t help????
Needless to say I am still suffering from rectal bleeding. Lunati part# 40149 (its in the dirt track section of their website) Lift at Valve .561 In 570 ex Duration at .050 tappet lift 259 in 264 ex Lobe separation is 106 DTC. The only thing I can come up with is during the motor build while the machine shop was still building the motor, parts changed. What I mean by that is C&S from St. Charles Missouri had my 850 and they had asked me a ton of questions about my car, trans, engine, rear, etc... they set the carb up to fit my application. They were in direct contact with my engine builder. I think my engine builder told them one thing and then did another. My carb. came back with the 170's already installed with a note saying to only go up or down 1-2 jet sizes as that would be all that was needed. I should be at Cecil this Wednesday to tune on it a little more. Thanks again for giving me some insight/input.

Just because a cam is for dirt track does not mean its not good for drag racing......Joe Sherman.very big on the west coast did a engine in Hot Rod mag. last year is he used a dirt track cam for drag racing too.....OLDHEADhusky100 wrote:Needless to say I am still suffering from rectal bleeding. Re: Alcohol/ e.t help????
With your set up i would bet that you got no compression ,what is cranking compression ?
you at least need a egt gauge to help out but starting with steel heads i would not run it that hot!
if you get it leaned up and leaving clean you can start of with 36 deg. time and keep advancing it till mph drops the back it up two.
then try to raise up h20 temp 10 deg from 150 . each run following the mph rule . then lean it again and start over . my small cam no compresion alky motors wanted 42 deg time ,160 deg. water at burn out ,picked up 10 deg. above that at finish line and were leaner than any body cared to think . my egt was best et and most consistant at 920 . i dont care where the gauges read only a reference to what had the best mph . if you want to see if the cam is too small when you get it maxed out try tighning up the valve lash hot to below spec by .007 and see if it flys
then you can play with cam timing and rocker ratios and start all over .!!! good luck not many will painstakingly go through this old school time tested methods but even if you dyno it to death it still wont be maxed at the track!

RHS Pro Topline. Will have to search the specs as you guessed it the machine shop did not supply any info on the heads other then they are RHS. If you want to get the shaft from a machine shop let me know as I can send you to a good one.

You can get the car in the 10"s by getting out of the seat and putting me in it.
