NHRA Qualifying

I am from the UK and have just strated watching NHRA drag racing on youtube.

One thing I don't understand is that they talk about getting into the top 12 even though it is a 16 car field.

Can someone please explain how that works.

to add 'excitment' to qualifying NHRA decided that going into Saturday's runs with a larger number of cars not in the field would be better.
