Vaccum pumps?

Post by juiced347 »

Hey guys i am sure this has been posted on here before but i am kind of new to the site and cant find this topic in any old posts but, i need some imput from some of you experienced racers/builders i am currently running a high compression (13.5:1) small block ford (347) the car is run on two systems of spray and goes in the high eights. currently i am running just regular breathers in the valve covers and i have had a few people tell me to run a vaccum pump and with running one i would see some nice gains. Any one have any info on this or personal experience i would GREATLY appreciate any and all help Thanks alot ~ Rob If this is true could any one also point me in the direction of a good kit to go with

Vacuum pumps are a great choice for motors that are built for them,
Bearing clearance and ring gap are specific to run a vacuum pump.

It might work out ok but you got to watch how much vacuum you pull,
I would make some phone calls before just bolting one on a motor not built specific for a pump.

Aerospace and moroso both make nice kits, you will also need a specific alternator/bracket.

I've been running a GZ motorsports setup for a few years. It's been trouble free. I run 18hg and have not seen any ill effects. And all my oil leaks/seepages have stopped.

1 important tip would be to run a filter on the releif valve, when it is limiting vacuum as your going down track it's sucking unfiltered air into the engine. I use a Aerospace relief valve and a moroso breather fits right over it...

I also have run the original moroso design in both 3 and 4 vane... they did not pull as much as tmy little GZ.... Heard alot of bad stuff about the Aerospace, they are pretty, but.....

Star and Product engineering are great pumps, but big bucks...

THE GAINS YOU SEE WILL BE PROPORTIONED BY HOW MUCH BLOWBY YOU HAVE PAST THE RING PACK AS WILL THE AMOUNT OF VACUME A GIVEN PUMP WILL MAKE ..YOU NEED TO WATCH OUT FOR PULLING ALOT OF VOLUME /HIGH VACUME . YOU CAN DRY OUT THE WRIST PINS . IF NOT COATED YOU WILL FIND THIS OUT ON TEARDOWN . YOU WONT BEABLE TO REUSE THE PINS OR PISTONS .CASTISTOPHIC FAILURE TO THIS IS RARE IN DRAG RACING ONLY DIRT /ROAD RACE GUYS.

I got my stuff from Star Machine. No more leaks! Well worth the $1K I sepnt buying everything from them (except for the belt). Best drive mandrel in the business. Great oil seperator tank, pump has been fine. About 50 passes with it so far. Wasn't cheap, but as long as it lasts I don't care. Had to put a regulator on it, pulled 20" at 7000rpm. Got it down to 12" now.

I'll try to get some pictures. Same pump that Chris with the Blue Vette has. Think it's called their Sportsman Pump. Kinda plain-looking, not polished. Almost looks cheap compared to the beautiful mandrel and oil seperator tank! When I take some pics I'll post them here.
